This is The Underneath movie, on VHS, in the carton. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, it's about a youngish man who returns to his hometown, after fleeing from it a few years earlier for his sports gambling debts. It features William Fichtner in a supporting role. This is a former rental that played fine for me.
